1989 Brothers Tony and Joe Calabro seize an opportunity to purchase a small northern New South Wales bus company in receivership. They have the self-belief to turn Surfside Buslines into a thriving operation through good customer service and hard work. Beginning with a small fleet of buses, they implement a number of progressive initiatives which lead to consistent year-on-year passenger growth.

1993 Surfside Buslines acquires Tweed Bus Service, Gold Coast Citybus (1995), Gold Coast Tourist Shuttle (1998) and Coomera Bus Lines (2001).

1995 The Calabro brothers recognise a need for further innovation in the bus manufacturing sector and form Bustech to design and manufacture passenger transport vehicles.

2001 For the first time in its history, the rapidly-growing Gold Coast region has an integrated timetable and consistent service run by Surfside Buslines.

2008 The Calabros purchase Sunbus in Townsville, Cairns, Magnetic Island, Sunshine Coast and Rockhampton. Surfside Buslines, Bustech and Sunbus now operate under the newly formed Transit Australia Group.

2011 Bustech launches Australia’s first double decker (CDi model) for urban transport since 1973.

2012 The NSW Government trials Bustech double decker buses.

2014 Transit Australia Group launces the People Excellence Program to recognise and develop the professional skills among its workforce and to encourage new and existing workers to develop a dynamic and successful career within the transport industry.

2015 Bustech attracts international attention with the unveiling of Australia’s first electric bus designed, engineered and manufactured domestically. Transit Australia Group is named Gold Coast Business of the Year.

2016 Transit Australia Group named Queensland Government ‘Large Employer of the Year’ for its People Excellent Program.

2016 Through Bustech, TAG strikes strategic alliance with Precision Components in Adelaide to develop an advanced manufacturing facility to produce next-generation, environmentally friendly diesel and electric buses.
